How to create Instagram Highlights covers
The Instagram story highlights section allows you to categorize and store past stories on your feed so that they last longer than the normal 24 hours. This is a fantastic way for your audience to get a VIP look into your life and peer behind the curtain of your brand with just one click!
When thinking of which categories to create - consider your brand’s Instagram like a glossy magazine. What features should be included that are relevant to your brand? Try to add a feature story for each component that makes up your brand. Ideas include: behind the scenes, highlights of your work, fun with clients or other staff members, your location and anything that’s an important part of your business.
To keep your instagram branding cohesive, you can also create your own cover image for each featured category. This will keep your Instagram story highlights looking clean and professional.
There are a few places you can curate images to feature on your feed, such as Canva or Wordswag. Try to keep it super simple and include some sort of graphic, word, or icon that will fit well into the circular feature. Think of the categories you want to include and then create a canvas the dimensions of an Instagram story: 1080 x 1920 px. All you need is a canvas that size and then some sort of an icon in the center of the image that will fit into the circular story feature icon. Once you have the canvas created, add in any words or graphics that you’d like to appear for your featured story! Try to use something that feels cohesive to your brand story. You can keep things simple and one color or make it fun using your branding colors!
Then, download your images or save them onto your phone, ready to be used. If you already have featured stories, click on the one you want to edit, then click “edit highlight”, and then “edit cover” so you can select the correct cover image. You can move it around and make it fit the space the way you want it to appear and it’s easy to edit them if you want to make any changes. If you don’t have any featured stories yet but want to upload your covers, just hit the (+) that says highlight and then select the images or stories you want to feature there, then follow the steps above to set your cover.
Then line it up, click “done” and you’re all set! Now you have a beautiful way to show off your stories without taking away from the curation and aesthetic of your brand.
